The Issues of Communist Spies Within the Chinese Democratic Movement

-- Wei Jingsheng

One news a few days ago caused widespread concern among netizens.  This is the case of Chinese spy Alexander Yuk Ching Ma.  The reason why this case has attracted great attention from the pro-democracy movement and the CCP anti-democracy Internet police is because his co-conspirator #1 in the case is a member of anti-communist organizations.  Currently co-conspirator #1 suffers from an advanced and debilitating cognitive disease due to his age and thus is free from an arrest warrant and prosecution.  According to an in-depth investigation by the Hong Kong Apple Daily, the co-conspirator #1 is Mr. David Ma, an activist during the early Chinese democracy movement.

Mr. David Ma served in the CIA in his early years.  After 1989, he joined the Front for a Democratic China and became a director and vice chairman.  In 1998, during the establishment of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, he was recommended by Mr. WAN Runnan as the chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee until 2003 when he voluntarily resigned to engage in charity works.

Judging from the disclosed court documents, David Ma was pulled into the muddy water by his younger brother Alexander Ma at the beginning of this century.  Prior to this, Alexander Ma, who was already a spy for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), mainly collected military intelligence.  The main purpose of recruiting David Ma was because of his status as one of the leaders of the anti-communist organizations.  The documents did not clearly state how much intelligence about the pro-democracy organizations was leaked during this period, and it may not be important to the Americans.  However, this case has caused the vigilance of pro-democracy comrades and the crazy attacks of the CCP Internet police, which is worthy of my comments.

These CCP Internet police took this incident as their opportunity to shout that there are Communist spies within the Chinese democracy movement, hoping to attack the public image of the democracy movement.  In fact, it is common sense that there are CCP spy agents in the pro-democracy movement.  It would be strange if the CCP did not send spies to the pro-democracy movement which is its biggest enemy, by ways of pulling people out and sending in Trojan horses.  Therefore, since the establishment of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition in 1998, I have been constantly warning our people against the sabotage activities of the spies, otherwise we would be inevitably be destroyed by the spies.  The tragic end of WANG Bingzhang, an earlier leader of the overseas Chinese democracy movement, is the best teaching material from the negative side.

But the early democracy movement also had another negative teaching material.  Someone trying to catch the CCP spies received a lawsuit instead.  Political agents generally do not violate American laws, and are protected by American justice.  One cannot catch the spies with great fanfare since one can't get the evidence that is locked in the file cabinets of the Ministry of State Security in China.  It is inevitable to be bitten back.  Therefore, the policy of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition is: after discovering the spies and internal investigation results are clear, to remind our own people to take precautions and isolate the spies from the democratic movement.  I have discussed many times this policy in various mainstream media, yet it has not aroused public vigilance.  On the contrary, the media isolated me and blocked my opportunity to speak through the media, which reflects the seriousness of the infiltration by the CCP.

Some pro-democracy friends criticized me for not reminding everyone earlier.  Indeed, I had been privately reminded by relevant authorities long ago, so I persuaded David Ma to leave.  I do have reasons for not disclosing it internally.  First, I have the responsibility of keeping it secret and should not show off my relationship with the US government.  The second, at that time, we did not discover activities which undermined the pro-democracy movement organization conducted by David Ma, and he consciously quit without causing trouble to our organization and members.  The third is that although he had been misbehaving, he still supported the pro-democracy movement in his heart, so I wanted to save some face for him.

Not only are people like him helpless, most of the CCP police also sympathize with and support the democracy movement.  During my detention and interrogation in China, I received their respect and help within their capacity.  It is unnecessary to say that there are no good people at all.  On the contrary, it is more important to learn the lessons from David Ma.  Everyone has his or her own uniqueness and weaknesses.  The task of the CCP agents is to use these as gaps on the eggshells to lay maggots and gradually disarm you.  There are many people who did not listen to others warnings and were used by the spies.  They were sold by these agents yet help these agents to count money from the sales of themselves while keeping the secrets for these agents.  Like David Ma, their friendship and family affection replaced reasoning.

Likely there are more people we don't know who, just like David Ma, have been dragged into the muddy water by relatives and friends, than what we already know.  When I remind people of the spies who have caused harm to the pro-democracy movement, how many people really believe it?  It is not just Westerners who want to keep friendships with everyone and lack vigilance against the vicious CCP.  The situation of the overseas democracy movement is not much better.  Letting friendship replace rational judgment is a big favorable factor for the success of the CCP spies.
