Foundation Welcome Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, the Winner of the 16th ``Wei
Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize'' in 2019, and His Response
On December 5, 2019,
the Wei Jingsheng Foundation awarded its 16th "Wei Jingsheng Chinese
Democracy Champion Prize" to Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun of Hong Kong for
his love and support to the Catholics and others in Hong Kong and Mainland
China. During mid-February 2020,
the 88-year-old Cardinal Zen personally arrived in Washington DC, USA. The Wei Jingsheng Foundation hosted a
special dinner to honor him. On
February 13, 2020, entrusted by the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, the US House
Speaker Nancy Pelosi presented “the Wei Jingsheng
Chinese Democracy Champion Prize” to Cardinal Zen in
the Speaker’s Ceremonial Hall. Speaker Pelosi and Cardinal Zen also exchanged information
and thoughts of the situation of Catholics in Hong Kong and China. In particular, Speaker Pelosi warmly
hosted and gave a personal tour to Cardinal Zen, Mr. Wei Jingsheng and their
entourage to visit the office of the Speaker, as well as the unique view of
Washington DC from the central balcony of the Speaker’s suite in
the US Capitol.
In support and
appreciation, Cardinal Zen donated his US$3,300 prize money to the Wei
Jingsheng Foundation as his way to support freedom and democracy. Hereby, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation
expresses its gratitude!

The following is
Cardinal Zen’s response to his receiving the 16th ``Wei
Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize” last
December:
"Thanks to the
Foundation for presenting the 16th "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy
Champion Prize" to me. I am
deeply humbled and encouraged, and I am extremely grateful. I am humbled that I have never paid a
heavy price for fighting for democracy like many fighters. What is encouraging is that your
foundation actually praises and encourages all the countless fighters who have
persevered in Mainland China and Hong Kong -- they sacrificed everything for
democracy.
I remember 30 years
ago, the people of Eastern Europe got rid of the enslavement of the autocrats,
yet it seems warriors in our country were bleeding in vain on Tiananmen
Square. But we know that the blood
is not lost in vain, as my Catholic predecessors said, "The blood of the
martyrs is the seed of the faithful." In the "Occupy Central" plan or the "Umbrella
Movement", those seeds have already sprouted. It seems that these movements were also silent
failures. In fact, the sweat and
tears irrigated the "anti-extradition bill protest". This time it really shed blood. Many lives have been sacrificed in
unknown circumstances.
I am convinced that
the small tree of freedom and democracy is about to blossom and bear fruits,
and with God’s help will not be delayed any longer.
Let us, the Chinese
sons and daughters scattered all over the world, persevere in the struggle and
pray persistently. May freedom and
democracy be immortal, and may the children of God be able to build a new world
with dignity and unity! "

2019年12月5日，魏京生基金會將其年第十六屆『魏京生中國民主鬥士獎』授予關愛並支援香港與大陸的天主教徒及其他人民的香港陳日君樞機。2020年2月中旬，88歲高齡的陳日君樞機親自抵達華盛頓，魏京生基金會專門設晚宴招待，並邀請美國國會衆議院佩羅西議長于2020年2月13日代表魏京生基金會在議長的儀式廳向陳日君樞機頒發『魏京生中國民主鬥士獎』。佩羅西議長與陳日君樞機就香港及中國天主教徒的情況進行了交流與鼓勵。佩羅西議長還熱情地招待陳日君樞機、魏京生先生及隨行人員們參觀了美國國會大廈議長辦公室及其中央陽臺上獨一無二的美國首都華盛頓風景。
作爲對民主自由的支援，陳日君樞機將三千三百美元的獎金又回贈給了魏京生基金會。魏京生基金會特此表示感謝！

以下爲陳日君樞機去年12月感謝基金會將第十六屆『魏京生中國民主鬥士獎』授予他時的感言：
「感謝基金會將第十六屆『魏京生中國民主鬥士獎』頒給本人，本人深感慚愧又感鼓舞，萬分感謝。慚愧的是本人為了爭取民主從未如多位鬥士們付出沈重的代價，鼓舞的是貴基金會在得獎人身上其實是讚揚及鼓勵所有無數在中國大陸及香港堅持不懈，為爭取民主犧牲一切的勇士們。
記得卅年前，東歐人民擺脫了專制者的奴役而我國在天安門的勇士們看來卻白白流了鮮血。但我們知道那鮮血絕不是白白流的，正如我天主教前輩說過『殉道者的血是信友的種子』。在『佔中』計劃或『雨傘運動』中，那種子已發芽，看來那運動也是默默的失敗收場，其實那汗水、淚水又灌溉了『反送中運動』，這次真的流了鮮血，不少生命在不明不白的情形下被犧牲了。
我深信自由、民主的小樹即將開花結果，上天的助佑不會再延遲了。
讓我們散居全球各地的中華兒女，堅持抗爭，恆心祈禱，願自由民主永存不朽，願天主的兒女都能尊嚴地同心建設新天新地！」
