Potomac Cultural Salon September Event Announcement: Wei Jingsheng's Analysis of the CCPs Infighting from History and Reality

One of the differences between democracy and autocracy is whether the struggle within the ruling class is openly mild or secretly cruel.  Dictators have the tendency to pursue long-term or even life-long governance.  It is precisely because of the cruel nature of the struggle that even endangers the lives of their own families and subordinates.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has had the cruelest form of struggle since its adolescence of the Red Army period, and it has been maintained to this day.  After the Cultural Revolution, a group of the ruling class members who were abused and even went to prison, such as Deng Xiaoping, Peng Zhen, Hu Yaobang, etc., once reduced the degree of cruelty of the struggle, and also formulated some basic systems, such as abolishing the tenure of life, and being immune from retaliation after stepping down., etc.

However, after the autocracy gradually recovered its essence, not only Xi Jinping, but also the unsuccessful Bo Xilai leaned to the old routine of cruel struggle and relentless strikes.  This is not an issue of whether individuals are willing or unwilling, but the increasing brutality and unguaranteed consequences of stepping down that forces them to return to their autocratic and authoritarian politics, or the original appearance of what they should look like.

The Potomac Cultural Salon is honored to invite Mr. Wei Jingsheng, a famous Chinese exiled politician and social activist, to analyze the internal struggle of the CCP from history to reality.

Wei Jingsheng is a famous anti-communist, democrat and social activist of China.  He has won dozens of human rights, democracy, and freedom awards such as the Robert Kennedy Human Rights Award, Sakharov's Freedom of Thought Award of the European Parliament, and the National Endowment for Democracy's Democracy Award.  Currently, he is the chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, the president of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, and the chairman of the Asian Democracy Alliance.  He was born in a family of high-ranking officials at the beginning of the CCPs founding of the Peoples Republic of China in 1950.  He was well-educated, and also heard and witnessed the power struggle among the CCP high-level officials.  In the process of networking the whole country at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, he personally experienced the darkness of CCPs rule and the suffering of the Chinese people, thus he sprouted the idea of freedom and democracy.  In 1978, he published a big-character poster "The Fifth Modernization" on the Xidan Democracy Wall to promote democracy.  He was arrested twice for the counter-revolutionary crimes and conspiracy to overthrow the government.  After spending more than 18 years in prisons, he arrived in the USA in exile in 1997.  The text he secretly wrote in prisons was sorted and published into the book "The Courage to Stand Alone Letters from the Prisons" and was translated into more than a dozen languages.
