The Relationship Between the June 4 Massacre and Zero-Covid Policy

-- Wei Jingsheng

Young people born after the 1980s may not know much about the June 4 massacre.  Due to the information blockade by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), many people are not very clear about the background and reasons for the June 4 massacre in 1989.  When I gave a speech abroad, I even encountered young Chinese asking: Did the thugs kill the People's Liberation Army (PLA)?  This can be seen that it is not the young people who don't use their brains, but the false information from the CCP that has caused the misunderstanding of many people.  Just think about it, Chinese students and citizens were unarmed, how could it be possible to slaughter heavily armed PLA troops?

Many people who have experienced that event also believe that it started from commemorating Hu Yaobang, the former CCP Secretary-General, and at the same time complaining about the injustice against the then CCP Secretary-General, Zhao Ziyang.  This statement seems to be true but really is at fault.  Complaining for these 2 CCP Secretary-Generals was the fuse that led to that movement.  What really caused tens of thousands of Chinese to take to the streets to demonstrate was Deng Xiaoping's learning of early capitalism, which created the injustice and growing corruption in officialdom that was getting worse and worse.  The cooperation between corrupt Chinese officials and profiteers was the target of that movement.  The PLA army that slaughtered the Chinese people precisely represented the class of the corrupt officials and profiteers, that is, the wealthy class with Chinese characteristics.

What the Chinese people demand is a normal life.  Since ancient times, turmoil in Chinese society has always originated from the abnormal living environment created by the government.  The sudden huge wealth of corrupt officials and profiteers, compared with the hardships of the average people, is the most important reason for the fierce resistance.  Such was exactly the case in 1989.  Avenging for these 2 CCP Secretary-Generals was only the fuse that led to the outbreak of the movement.  However, the slogans and demands of the movement at that time were not against the CCP, but had the illusion that the CCP would eliminate corrupt officials by itself.  But it had already made Deng Xiaoping's clique think of it as conflict with its enemy that was difficult to reconcile, and could only be solved by violent suppression.

In China, is the gap between rich and poor smaller now than it was 30 years ago?  Are the corrupt officials more restrained now than they were 30 years ago?  Is the CCP more aided by the international community now than it has been in the past 30 years?  None is true.  In the past 30 years, there has been no large-scale resistance movement in China.  In addition to the rapid economic development with the help of the United States, the most important reason is that during the Jiang Zemin era, some compromises were made with the Chinese society and expanded the scope of the ruling class, include buying out the intellectual elite with economic benefits.  As a result, the middle class and the petty bourgeoisie have been expanded, and the emergence of fuses has been suppressed in China, so that the continuing resistance would not be in a large scale, and the CCP's autocratic regime has been maintained.

In the current situation, the rapid development created by deception and the cooperation of big capital in the USA is obviously unsustainable.  The gap between the rich and the poor, and the combination of government and business have led to a rapid escalation of social conflicts.  The ugly faces of the bribed elites can hardly play the role of deceiving the people.  Xi Jinping not only wants to harvest economic benefits from the common Chinese, but also wants to harvest from the CCP officials and business class.  This wave of operations surpassed Deng Xiaoping and went directly toward being a dictatorial emperor, so it was bound to meet unanimous opposition.

The purpose of the rebellion is different, but the goal of the rebellion is the same.  Its severity exceeds that of 1989.  Now it only needs a fuse to bring a real chaos to China.  Not only will Xi Jinping's dictatorship not be guaranteed, but the one-party autocratic system of the CCP will also collapse along with it.  This is the reason why the powerful class that combines both Chinese government and business has not yet done anything to Xi Jinping.

But Xi Jinping did not want to give up.  He needs to strengthen his authority and escape the consequences of dying without a place to die.  Two means to strengthen his authority: One is the blockade of various cities under the pretext of the virus.  In addition to showing authority, his real purpose is to eliminate the daring and the seeds of rebellion in advance.  The second is to start a war that he believes will be won, thus solve the problem of extending his term by election to become a real emperor.

But probably Xi will not be able to act on his second move.  This barbaric policy of zero-Covid has already caused a lot of grievances among the Chinese, and the people are struggling to live.  Various forms of resistance have emerged one after another, and there is a tendency to further expand.  This zero-Covid policy, which disregards the life and death of the Chinese people, not only has led to economic downturn in China, but also caused the people's living environment to deteriorate rapidly, described as “officials forcing the people to rebel” in an old Chinese proverb.  This zero-Covid policy is precisely the fuse now to lead to “officials forcing the people to rebel”, the fuse that leads to the change of the Chinese Communist regime, and the fuse that leads to the downfall of the Chinese Communist Party.
