Announcement of Wei Jingsheng Foundation's 18th Annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" Award

December 5, 2021

Since 2004, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation has awarded the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" every year on December 5th.  In the last 17 years the awarding of this prize has had reverberations around the world.  The people persisting in the fight for democracy and freedom in China, who are at any moment in life-threatening danger, have thus been encouraged and consoled.

As can be expected, those who nominate a candidate believe the person they have nominated has made a great contribution to the cause of Chinese democracy and freedom.  Nominating someone in and of itself is a way to commend all champions of democracy, including those unknown, untiring democracy heroes who do not concern themselves with fame and fortune.  We have great respect for their strength of spirit and the sacrifices they have made.  For this year, we received excellent recommendations.  The three final candidates selected this year are all very outstanding, so that selecting a winner from them has become a challenge to the award judging committee.

During the years since Xi Jinping came to power, China's human rights situation has been deteriorating day by day.  The speech and rights protection of the Chinese people have been further suppressed.  The freedom of ethnic minorities is further deprived.  Now even the middle and upper class people who were loyal to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) can't escape the fate of being exploited.  The entire people and even the high-ranking CCP officials are confined to a mental state of being angry but do not dare to speak.  The life of ordinary Chinese is even more difficult.  With more than 40% of the population struggling to survive with a monthly income of less than 1,000 RMB and 70% of the population having a monthly income of less than 2,000 RMB, every Chinese has to bear the soaring inflation.  At the same time, the CCP has implemented its wolf warrior diplomacy overseas, causing the international community to strike back, which further pushes China into difficulties both domestically and internationally.

During this difficult time, many people are disappointed, even some pro-democracy activists who have struggled for many years are depressed, and even feel that there was no light at the end of the tunnel.  However, the emergence of young and fearless warriors make us more convinced that the Chinese people are awaking -- their willingness and determination to fight for democracy and freedom, especially freedom of speech, are no less than was true of the older generations.  Under the impetus of Xi Jinping, the unscrupulous chief accelerator for the coming collapse of the CCP, as the international community finally awakens and is no longer fooled by the CCPs large-scale propaganda overseas and the work of its united front, and abandons its appeasement policy, the dawn of Chinas democracy and freedom is right in front of us with our hard work.  This is exactly what the annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" wants to support and to encourage.

Today, the judging committee of the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" announces that the winner of this year's "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" is Ms. Zhang Zhan.  This year, she has been nominated several times by different friends, and is the most nominated candidate among this year's other candidates.  Not only is she the first woman to be awarded the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize", but she is also the youngest among all the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" winners over the past 18 years.

Zhang Zhan was born on September 2, 1983.  She is from Xianyang, Shaanxi.  She is a citizen journalist and a Christian.  After obtaining a bachelor's degree in insurance and a master's degree in finance from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Zhang Zhan went to Shanghai as a talent introduced in 2010.  She used to work as a lawyer, but after she participated in rights defending activities and participated in the signature drive to amend the Lawyers Management Measures, her lawyer's practice license was suspended.  In February 2020, Zhang Zhan went to Wuhan as a citizen journalist to follow up and report on the new Wuhan pneumonia epidemic caused by the new corona virus.  As a result, she was arrested by the CCP in May of the same year and was later sentenced to 4 years in prison for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble."  She is currently serving her sentence in Shanghai Women's Prison.

A person who is familiar with her case disclosed that Zhang Zhan was on a hunger strike in the detention center and was force fed.  She has been in very poor health.  Later, she was subjected to torture such as forced intubation, fetters, and 24-hour restraint belts.  In an interview with the media, the lawyer said that Zhang Zhan may unable to get out of the jail wall alive.  After Zhang Zhan was sentenced, she still refused to plead guilty, refused to eat normally, and determined to continue to protest.  She said: "Eating shows that I admit that I am a criminal being held here."

When the CCP and its media concealed the spread of this CCP virus, especially when it harms the health and interests of the people, it is the outstanding citizen journalists such as Zhang Zhan who stepped forward to investigate and report in Wuhan.  Without such efforts, the outside world cannot know the truth, nor can it be effective in self-defense.  However, the price of letting the public know the truth is that Zhang Zhan herself has lost her own freedom and even her own health.  A free and healthy society will not punish a courageous warrior who fights for freedom and health.  Every individual who loves freedom and health should also give back to a warrior like Zhang Zhan who fights for freedom and health for the others.

In an interview with reporters, Zhang Zhan said: "The problem in this country is a problem of its system.  I think we should be brave and insist.  Freedom is never free and I hope this country will change."  Zhang Zhan also said: "The national security police said that I attacked this system.  I think it is impossible for me to stop this kind of attack because the crimes of this country have never stopped.  When I see more and more people living in lies and disasters, if speaking for my own survival is even a crime, then I cant stop speaking."

Zhang Zhan's statements are loud and deafening.  She had not only expressed her deep understanding of the CCP system, but also expressed her determination to support justice and dare to pay the price.  At the time when the CCP strongly blocked information about the CCP virus, what Zhang Zhan brought to the world was not only the truth that was extremely difficult to investigate, but also her act of spreading the truth with the courage to be responsible to all mankind.  Her deeds, her steadfastness and unyielding nature have set an example for the Chinese people, and even more for Chinese women who pursue equality between men and women.  Zhang Zhan used her words and deeds to illustrate that democracy and freedom are not only the ideals and goals pursued and dedicated by men, but also by women in China.

This year's award to Ms. Zhang Zhan is also an award for all those who exposed the CCP virus and the Wuhan pneumonia caused by this virus.  It is a condolence to the people who have been suffering due to the CCP virus, especially the millions of lives who have died due to this virus.  Because of Zhang Zhan, people have learned some truths, and those of us who are still alive are more grateful.  Because of Zhang Zhan, Chinese women once again appear on the world stage as positive heroes.  Zhang Zhans bravery attacked the CCPs criminal system and also knocked on the conscience of all of us.  In the court, Zhang Zhan said to the presiding judge: "When you pushed me to this defender position, does not your conscience tell you that this is wrong?"  Conscience and faith are not just the source of her courage for her to uncover and reveal the truth, they are also the most basic cornerstone for us to build a democratic and free China in the future.

We believe that with the joint efforts of everyone, Zhang Zhan's personal sacrifices, conscience and faith are like seeds and will grow day by day until the dictatorship of the Chinese Communist regime is overthrown, and a democratic and free new China is established!

The total prize money collected this time is two thousand U.S. dollars (US $2,000.00).  The people who donated have donated their enthusiasm and belief in Chinese democracy, and we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to them.  In addition, we would also like to express our gratitude to all the friends who participated in the nomination of the 18th "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Award".  Thank you for your consistent support and encouragement over all these years.
