The Greatest Contribution of the 1989 Democracy Movement to Chinese History and Chinese Society

-- Wei Jingsheng’s Speech at the "June 4th" 32nd Anniversary Global Network Video Conference

June 1, 2021

A sentence once said by German philosophers was translated into Chinese as "what exists is reasonable".  This sentence is often quoted by Chinese and foreign scholars who defend the June 4th Massacre by the Chinese Communist regime.  In fact, this poor translation is wrong.  In context, what the philosophers meant is that everything that exists has a reason, or there is a reason for its existence.  This concept is completely different from rationality.

For example, in the case of the June 4th Massacre, the event happened with a reason but without rationality.  I remember when I was watching the activities of the students in the Tiananmen Square while in the prison, the old guard in charge of my cell stomped the floor with me and said: The students are too stupid, and the Communist regime definitely will open fire to shoot them.  What I'm talking about here is an understanding of the laws of the Chinese Communist regime, not to justify what the Communist Party did as reasonable.  The premise of this sentence is: the students' behavior was reasonable and legal, but they did not understand the laws of the Chinese Communist regime, so they would surely suffer.

Why did the old guards have the same opinion with me?  They were the old policemen who were selected to control me, a counter-revolutionary.  Under normal circumstances, their position was of course on the side of the Communist regime.  But this time they agreed with me because even they could see that that 1989 movement was a movement to change China thus everyone’s destiny, thus it was a movement that would increase happiness for everyone.  So all the people were standing together with the students in Tiananmen Square, unconsciously stood on the side of anti-communism, including the so-called Red Second Generation, who was denounced by the media in Hong Kong and Macao.

This movement concerning the interests of all the people in China failed, yet in another sense it did not fail.  It was suppressed by the brutal massacre on June 4, but it sowed the seeds of democracy and freedom in the hearts of the people across China.  It sowed antipathy and hatred against the Communist regime, and made most Chinese recognize that the Communist regime is the enemy of the Chinese people.  This laid a solid foundation of public opinion for China to move towards democracy and freedom.

Therefore, it was a glorious defeat.  This is the greatest contribution of the 1989 democracy movement to Chinese history and Chinese society.
