The Story of the Chained Woman

-- Wei Jingsheng

The description and controversy about the Chained Woman as a mother of eight in Xuzhou City have been raging for some time.  According to VOA reporter Ye Bing, the attention has surpassed the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and is the hottest topic in Chinese society now.  Why so?  Because it is related to the Chinese people's basic life.  This is a basic human rights issue that is happening around everyone, an issue that does not require advanced knowledge to understand, but also an issue that occurs when the government pretends not to see it.  So it shakes everyone's heart.

Without a need to investigate, the common Chinese already knew that in a not so impoverished Xuzhou, there were 50,000 wives who were abducted and trafficked.  This surprised foreigners and Chinese in the cities.  It also caught Xi Jinping, who was focusing on the Winter Olympics, by surprise.  The lesser ranked local officials who did not receive instructions from Xi made self-contradictory explanations which pushed the attention even higher.  So in an effort to clean up for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and misguide the media, some people say that this is the result when imperial power does not go to the countryside.  Dr. Ren Songlin in the United States retorted very succinctly: Family planning shows that the CCP rule is not the rule of imperial power, but the Western tradition reaching everyone down to the grassroots level.  Why can't they see women abducted and trafficked?  This is clearly an institutional pretense of not seeing.

A Chinese feminist group launched a rescue and support delivering operation.  They broke through the blockade of the police and sent two bouquets of flowers to the woman in chains.  But it was videotaped by CCTV as the care from the government.  This action not only shocked people but also made people laugh.  The CCP Secretary-General Xi Jinping, who deploys and directs everything by himself, was called as “a trafficker” of women by Ms. Yan Geling.  Her names and posts were immediately deleted from the entire Internet in China, along with the disappearance of her famous novels.  This action was indeed faster than the Xuzhou government.

Some friends criticized the CCP's family planning as the culprit.  Immediately, there were elites who came out to argue for the CCP, saying that such kidnapping has been in existence in rural China since ancient times, and so on.  In ancient times, there was an era of stealing brides, and now there is still a pretending to steal brides as the custom of ethnic minorities, and there are indeed buying and selling with marriages in poor rural areas.  But China has been monogamous since ancient times, and modern laws even exclude concubines.  This sophistry is not working.  Instead, it is in line with the theory of polygamy in China by the pioneers of the May Fourth Movement.  It was because people have read the novels by these May Fourth novelists and lost their minds.

Like Secretary-General Xi, Dr. Ren Songlin was also sent to the countryside for ten years.  He made a correct analysis that there is a long-term phenomenon of buying and selling through marriages in extremely poor rural areas in China, which must be mixed with trafficking women.  However, only when the ratio of males and females is seriously unbalanced due to the one-child policy imposed by the CCP, and a large number of single men exist in impoverished rural areas, does the abduction of women and children become a big business and a common phenomenon.  The need to maintain stability makes local officials pretend to be unable to see all of it, making this crime an act that is protected by the officials.

In the past, there was indeed a phenomenon of shared-wives in impoverished areas in northern China, which was called “fraternity”.  There are also polyandry and polygamy systems in Tibet, including the promotion of the female slaves to concubines in ancient China, all of which are methods to solve social problems between men and women.  Due to the precepts of Christianity, the West has to use the method of the First Girlfriend of the President to legitimize this issue.

Since the beginning of human society, the institution of marriage is one of the most important institutional issues.  Monogamy, like many beautiful ideals in ancient times, needs to be reconciled with real problems.  This is an issue that has been pondered by the theoretical circle for many years and is worthy of discussion.  But to use it to justify the systematic rape of young girls and the criminal acts of kidnapping and trafficking women and children is really inferior.  Except for the intellectual elite who flattered Secretary-General Xi, who can say something like that?  However, not only Chinese elites, but also some elites in the United Nations and the West are competing with these inferiors.

Due to the nonsense of the elites from the May Fourth Movement, after the CCP came to power, they boasted about liberating women and practicing monogamy.  In fact, it was the introduction of the Western religious system, which is stricter and more absolute than the traditional Chinese monogamy.  This did not liberate the Chinese women at all, but made them the tool for communism without choice.  Is this called liberation?

The liberation of women, like the liberation of all people in China, requires legal protection of human rights, the freedom to choose a way of life, the power to supervise the government, and the right to express opinions.  Only a democratic system can do this, although it is, and may never be, perfect.
