Talking about Taiwan Issue on Human Rights Day

On Human Rights Day, December 10, 2023, Wei Jingsheng's 5-minute video on Taiwan issues just prior to the Taiwan election was played to the German delegation visiting Taiwan and the Taiwanese people, at the National Human Rights Museum in Taiwan. The following is the main content of Wei Jingsheng's videotaped speech.

Taiwan is undergoing an election campaign. I would like to share my views on the Taiwan issue with my friends in Taiwan now.

For the past few decades, the stand of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been Taiwan's independence. The prerequisite for independence is that you are not independent yet and must be independent from the entity of Greater China. This is tantamount to recognizing that you are part of China and giving the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) a reasonable excuse to unify you. Now DPP candidate Ching-te Lai has modified it to: Taiwan is originally an independent country with sovereignty, its name is the Republic of China, and its territory includes Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu Islands. This brings us back to reality. Once there is a security problem, friendly countries can help reasonably and legally, otherwise it will become interference in the internal affairs of a country.

The purpose of the Kuomintang has also changed greatly. In the past, it tried to unify with Mainland China, but the gap in strength was obviously too large and made it unrealistic. Therefore, it should abandon any notion of one-China and return to the current reality of the Republic of China. Although the territory has shrunk, the sovereignty remains. Moreover, the Republic of China has been there for more than a hundred years. The Republic of China was even a founding member of the United Nations. On the basis of this reality, you seek your own dignity and status, and seek recognition and help from the international community. Whether others recognize your independence or not is very important, but you must first recognize it to yourself. Neither seek independence, nor seek reunification, but returning to the reality of protecting the interests and security of the people is the right way. Don't create any excuses for the Chinese Communist Party to unify Taiwan.

人权日谈台湾问题

2023年12月10日人权日，魏京生有关台湾大选等台湾问题的5分钟录像在台湾国家人权博物馆向德国访台观选团及台湾民众播放。以下为魏京生录像谈话的主要内容。

台湾正在进行选战，我和在台湾的朋友们分享一下我对台湾问题的看法。

民进党过去几十年来的说法是台湾独立。独立的前提是你现在还不独立，要从大中国这个实体中独立出去。这等于承认你是中国的一部分，给中共一个统一你的合理理由。现在民进党的候选人赖清德把他修改为：台湾本来就是一个独立有主权的国家，名字就叫中华民国，领土包括台澎金马。这就回归了现实。一旦安全有问题，友邦就能合理合法地来帮助，否则就成了干涉内政。

国民党的宗旨也有了很大变化。过去要统一大陆，实力明显差距太大，不太现实。所以应该放弃一个中国的任何说法，回到中华民国目前的现实中来。虽然领土缩小了，但主权仍在。而且一百多年了，中华民国还是联合国的创始国。在这个现实基础上谋求自身的尊严和地位，谋求国际社会的承认和帮助。别人是否承认很重要，但首先要自己承认自己。既不要独立，也不要统一，回到现实中来保护好国民的利益和安全，才是正道。不要给中共统一台湾制造各种借口。
