The Wei Jingsheng Foundation Ceremoniously Presents "Thurgood Marshall and the American Modern Civil Rights Movement and Development History" by Mr. Gao ShengHan, as Part of its Democracy Academy

Today, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation is proud and feels fortunate to present our Chinese readers this very unique series "Thurgood Marshall and the American Modern Civil Rights Movement and Development History" by Mr. Gao ShengHan as an very important part of our Democracy Academy.  It follows our successful launch of the Chinese translation of "Lessons in Democracy" (by Roland Watson) in October 2010, which receives more than one thousand hits per month.

Along with this publication, we want to welcome Mr. Gao ShengHan's new beautiful daughter into this world to breath in fresh air and humanity.  We trust this series also brings fresh air and inspiration for our Chinese democratic future.

The first 40 articles series we publish today is only the first part of Mr. Gao ShengHan's effort to introduce our readers to the civil rights movement in the USA, along with the other history and world politics associated with.  We want to use this series to illustrate how the America as a country with high human rights principles and standards that people in many countries look up to came to be.  Despite the basic values and principles set by its founding fathers and its constitution, America's democracy and civil rights were only realized and improved on by Americans' own effort and hard work, step-by-step, case-by-case.  Therefore, we in particular hope that this series serves to awaken, inspire, and provide good lessons for us the Chinese to learn and apply to our own progress.

As an extremely talented and hard-working writer, Mr. Gao ShengHan has written this series in a most vivid and detailed way about a part of American history that no other writer has ever presented in Chinese in such depth and completion.  This lack of material may in part result from the Chinese authority's censorship.  When Mr. Gao ShengHan was going to have this excellent book printed in China earlier this year, the process stopped because the foreword was written by Mr. Wei Jingsheng.

Below we present Mr. Wei's foreword, for people to know better about Mr. Gao ShengHan and his writings.

Authentic Backgrounds for the American Modern Civil Rights Movement History

-- A Foreword for "Thurgood Marshall and the American Modern Civil Rights Movement and Development History" by Wei Jingsheng

Mr. Gao Shenghan was born in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China.  He immigrated to the USA with his family during his early youth.  The American culture he received could be said to be authentic.  His understanding of the thinking and behavior of Americans is unlike that of other new immigrants and typical students who are studying in the USA.  Due to his family education and through his own efforts, he retained very good capacities for listening, speaking, reading, and writing Chinese.  His writing skill is at the level of professional writers, i.e. better than most of the Chinese people.  These two authentic backgrounds are reflected in his articles with two major characteristics.

First, he does not have the misunderstanding of American society that typical new immigrants and students who study in the USA inevitably have.  We often read the smattering of articles in newspapers and magazines written by those kinds of people.  Ignoring the vulgar articles that deliberately manufacture overseas adventures, even in the articles that contain formal descriptions and analyses of the USA there is a lot of misunderstanding and oversight about the American society.  Repeating these baseless assertions results in the often kaleidoscopic distortion of the Chinese people's misunderstanding of the USA.  Together with the deliberate distortion by the politicians, the result is that almost all the newcomers to the USA are continuously realizing the United States is not as they thought before.  The United States described and analyzed by Mr. Gao ShengHan basically avoids these misunderstandings, thus restoring the original features.

The second characteristic is due to his perspective from the Chinese culture.  Generally Americans may have little misunderstanding of the USA.  However, the USA they tell us about is the USA they see through their American cultural perspective.  A lot of common knowledge they are accustomed to and therefore see no need to emphasize is not known to us the Chinese.  Further, they do not know that we do not know this "common knowledge."  Thus, a lot of things about the USA that we hear from them often result in even more serious misunderstanding.  In particular, for a lot of theory and history the error might be even much larger than from reading a novel.  The reason Mr. Gao ShengHan makes us feel very cordial is precisely because he describes these stories in accordance with the perspective of the Chinese culture.  Thus, we can relatively easily understand correctly without too much trouble.

I particularly like Mr. Gao Shenghan's description of the changes in the American social system in his "Thurgood Marshall and the American Modern Civil Rights Movement and Development History".  Telling stories continuously and pleasantly, he lets us know through an easy reading process that America's democratic system and human rights protection were not bestowed by a genius authority, but resulted from the constant change of the legal system and people's continuous struggle step by step.  Without debate and struggle, even bloodshed and sacrifice, no society will progress.  Let us follow the stories by Mr. Gao ShengHan to learn the true processes how America's democracy, freedom, and rule of law were established and continue to evolve.
